Storage Review: How I cut load time down by 82%

01 — The challenge

Storage Review reached out because their Elementor-based website was loading slowly – around 5.2 seconds. With their large database of enterprise and consumer-facing reviews, podcast and YouTube content, they needed a website home base that could run much more efficiently, but they didn’t want to change the design. They were also interested in cutting down on plugins, and fixing issues with an essential custom plugin.

02 — The approach

Over the course of a few months, I rebuilt the website as a custom WordPress theme, based on the Thesis framework. The exact same layout, archives, posts and pages – but without the visual builder bloat. I also eliminated the need for several plugins by absorbing core features into the theme’s functions.php, and fixed issues with a custom plugin that was key for the podcast.

03 — The results

5.2 seconds → under 1 second

The same exact website, but 78% smaller in size, and 82% faster to load. PageSpeed performance score of 99, plus 99 for Accessibility, and 100 for Best Practices and SEO.
